Clay Kirkland, CFA, is a Vice President and Portfolio Manager at Intrepid Capital. He is the Lead Portfolio Manager of the Intrepid Disciplined Value Fund and the separately managed Intrepid Disciplined Value portfolio. He is also the Co-Lead Portfolio Manager of the Intrepid Select Fund and the separately managed Intrepid Select portfolio. Mr. Kirkland focuses on research and valuation of mid- and large-cap equity securities. A CFA charterholder, he earned an MBA from Columbia Business School and received a B.S./B.A. degree, cum laude, in economics from Auburn University.
Cara M. Thome is a Portfolio Manager and Analyst at Rice Hall James & Associates, LLC. She has been at the firm for 17 years and has 21 years of industry experience. She works on the SMID Cap Equity, Small Cap Equity and Micro Cap Equity strategies. Before joining the firm, she worked as an analyst at the equity research department at George K. Baum & Company. She received a B.A. from Truman State University and an M.A. from the University of Exeter.
Thomas W. McDowell is Chief Executive Officer and Chief Investment Officer at Rice Hall James & Associates, LLC. He has been with the firm for 34 years and has 38 years of industry experience. He works on the SMID Cap Equity, Small Cap Equity and Micro Cap Equity strategies. He started at the firm as a portfolio manager and analyst. He assumed leadership of the company in 1994. Earlier, he was a portfolio manager at California First Bank and specialized in the consumer-related industries. He received a B.A. from the University of California, Los Angeles, and an MBA from San Diego State University.
R. Burns McKinney, CFA, is a Lead Portfolio Manager, an Analyst, a Managing Director and a CIO Value Equity US with Allianz Global Investors. He is the product team co-lead for the Dividend Value investment strategy. Mr. McKinney has 21 years of investment-industry experience. Before joining the firm in 2006, he was an equity analyst at Evergreen Investments, an investment-banking analyst at Alex. Brown & Sons, a vice president in equity research at Merrill Lynch and an equity analyst at Morgan Stanley. Mr. McKinney has a B.A. from Dartmouth College and an MBA from The Wharton School, The University of Pennsylvania.
Tara Kinateder is an Executive Vice President, a member of Ferguson Wellman Capital Management’s wealth management team and a member of the firm’s Global Sustainable Investing strategy team. Ms. Kinateder is a portfolio manager with clients concentrated in Oregon, Washington and California. She specializes in wealth management planning and preservation through asset allocation and cash flow analysis. Ms. Kinateder is passionate about guiding individuals and families as they plan for their financial futures by focusing on long-term goals and helping them navigate ongoing life changes. Prior to joining Ferguson Wellman, Ms. Kinateder was a senior vice president and market leader for the Portland, Oregon, office of U.S. Trust. Previously, she worked in New York and Seattle for Alliance Bernstein Wealth Management as a financial adviser and strategic consultant, respectively. Raised in Georgia, Ms. Kinateder earned her B.A. from Brenau University in Gainesville, Georgia, with a double major in journalism and business, graduating magna cum laude. She received a certificate in personal financial planning from the University of Washington’s Michael G. Foster School of Business and a certificate in investment strategies and portfolio management from the University of Pennsylvania’s Wharton School of Business. Ms. Kinateder is the past Chair of the Classic Wines Auction board and has co-chaired the annual auction the last two years. Ms. Kinateder is a member of the Arlington Club House Committee. Ms. Kinateder is also a past board member for Mentors 360, Oregon Repertory Singers and the Oregon Food Bank, where she also served on the finance committee.
Peter Jones, CFA, joined Ferguson Wellman Capital Management in 2015 and is Vice President of Research. Mr. Jones leads the firm’s Global Sustainable Investing strategy team, is an analyst and a member of the firm’s investment team. He develops and manages the multifactor model used by the investment team for its equity selection process. Mr. Jones also provides research support for equity strategies and sectors for all portfolios as well as performance analysis for client meetings. Mr. Jones is a native of Portland and graduated from the University of Portland with a B.A. in political science and minors in Spanish and psychology.
Peter Strzalkowski, CFA, serves as Co-Team Leader of OppenheimerFunds’ Investment Grade Debt team and is a Portfolio Manager of the Total Return Bond Fund, Oppenheimer Limited-Term Government Fund and Oppenheimer Limited-Term Bond Fund. Before joining the firm in August 2007, Mr. Strzalkowski served as Managing Partner and Chief Investment Officer of Vector Capital Management, LLC, a structured products money management firm he founded. He received a B.S. from Virginia Commonwealth University.
Harris L. “Shrub” Kempner Jr. has been Kempner Capital Management’s President since the firm’s inception in 1982. He is also a Portfolio Manager. He was President of U.S. National Bancshares and Chief Investment Officer for Frost Bank of Galveston (formerly United States National Bank) from 1969 to 1982. He received a B.A. from Harvard University in 1961 and an MBA from Stanford University in 1963.
Michael L. Shelton, CFA, joined Nicholas Company, Inc. in 2006. He serves as lead Portfolio Manager of Nicholas Equity Income Fund, co-Portfolio Manager of Nicholas Fund, and is a senior research analyst. Mr. Shelton has a depth of knowledge following years of covering the health care, technology and industrial sectors. Prior to joining Nicholas Company, Mr. Shelton worked for the Department of Defense Financing & Accounting Service as a financial analyst. He spent three years with Robert W. Baird as a research analyst, and at McDonald Investments for one year focusing on health care companies. Before starting his investment career, he worked with Ernst & Young as an auditor and tax consultant earning his CPA designation in 1995. Mr. Shelton graduated magna cum laude from Miami University in Oxford, Ohio, and obtained his MBA from Ohio State University. He has earned the right to use the CFA designation and is a member of the CFA Society Milwaukee.

Lawrence J. Pavelec, CFA, serves in a leadership position for Nicholas Company, Inc. as the Chief Operating Officer and head of product distribution. He also serves as an analyst and client portfolio manager for the separately managed account equity portfolios. Mr. Pavelec joined Nicholas Company in 2003 to serve as the Portfolio Manager for the Nicholas High Income Fund and lead the product distribution effort. His career as a credit analyst and portfolio manager began in 1984 with M&I Investment Management Corp., where he focused on investment-grade corporate bonds, asset-backed securities and mortgage-backed securities. Before joining Nicholas, he was with Brandes Investment Partners as the co-manager for Brandes Fixed Income Partners, serving as portfolio manager and head of marketing for the firm. Mr. Pavelec earned his B.S. in finance from the University of Wisconsin at La Crosse. He has served on various non-profit boards over the years, including the Mequon-Thiensville Education Foundation, North Shore Country Club, and the Peninsula School of Art. He has earned the right to use the CFA designation and is a member of the CFA Society Milwaukee.
