STEVEN C. MAYER has served as Senior Vice President and Chief
Financial Officer of Human Genome Sciences, Inc. and as a member
of the Operating Committee since September 1996. Prior to joining
HGS, from 1995 to 1996, he was Vice President and Chief Financial
Officer of GenVec, Inc., an early-stage gene therapy company.
From 1991 to 1995 he served as Vice President and Chief Financial
Officer and Senior Vice President and Chief Financial Officer of
TheraTech, Inc., a leading drug delivery company. Prior to
joining TheraTech, Mr. Mayer was involved in the formation of
Myriad Genetics and was CFO of another early stage biotech
company, NPI. He also has had experience in investment banking
with Smith Barney and in corporate finance with Martin Marietta
Corporation. Mr. Mayer holds an MBA degree from Stanford
University and a BA degree, cum laude, with honors in Economics
