Stanford Alexander – Weingarten Realty Investors (wri)

STANFORD ALEXANDER is Chairman and CEO of Weingarten Realty Investors, which is a public company listed on the New York Stock Exchange. He has held this position since 1962. He was educated in the Houston public school system, attended the University of Texas, graduating in 1949 with a Bachelor's degree in Business Administration. A year later, he attended Harvard Business School, where he received a Master's degree in Business Administration. After a two-year tour of duty with the U.S. Air Force, Mr. Alexander joined J. Weingarten, a family-owned 87-store supermarket firm in an executive training program, working in various operating areas. He became Director of Weingarten Markets Realty Company, a real estate affiliated company, which was formed in 1948 for the primary purpose of developing free-standing supermarkets. The firm later changed its name to Weingarten Realty, Inc. In March 1998, the company reorganized and became Weingarten Realty Investors. Mr. Alexander, a former Director of Chase Bank of Texas, NA Houston, serves as a Director of the Greater Houston Partnership Board of Directors; a member of the University of Houston System Development Board; Director of the National Association of Real Estate Investment Trusts Board of Governors; a Trustee of the National Jewish Center for Immunology and Respiratory Medicine Council of National Trustees; Director of the Tax Research Association; and a former Director of the Jewish Federation of Houston. He also is the Director of the Edna Gladney Home and Director of the National Conference of Community and Justice; and Director of the University of Texas M.D. Anderson Cancer Center/The University Cancer Foundation Board of Members; advisory board member of M.D. Anderson's Prostate Cancer Research Program; and Trustee of Landmark School, Prides Crossing, Massachusetts; advisory board member of the Sam Houston Area Council Boy Scouts of America; a Director of the William A. Lawson Institute for Peace and Prosperity; a member of the University of Texas System Health Science Center Development Board; and a member of the University of Houston-Downtown President's Advisory Council. From 1986 through 1993, Mr. Alexander received the Bronze, Silver, and Gold Awards from 'The Wall Street Transcript' for the best CEO of a public real estate company. During 1987, he was selected as one of the 25 people credited with changing Houston from a sprawling prairie to the nation's seventh largest metropolitan area. 'BusinessWeek' also honored Mr. Alexander by naming him to its 1988, 1989, 1990 and 1992 Corporate CEO Lists and in May of 1990, the Houston Chapter of the Stanford Business School Alumni Association honored him with the Houston Businessman of the Year Award. The National Conference of Christians and Jews honored Mr. Alexander with one of their Brotherhood Awards for his contributions to the REIT industry growth. Mr. Alexander received the Lifetime Achievement Award sponsored by Ernst & Young and 'The Houston Business Journal' in February of 1999, for his outstanding contributions to the city of Houston.
