JONATHAN J. MACQUITTY has been a Director of Abingworth Management Ltd.
(London, UK) and President of Abingworth Management Inc. (Menlo Park,
California) since 1999. Abingworth is a leading life science investor in
both North America and Europe, with four offices, 25 people and over
$700 million under management. Abingworth is one of the most
experienced trans-Atlantic venture capital firms, having invested in
over 80 life science companies, the majority of which have gone public
or been acquired. In 1988, following management positions at Genentech
and Genencor, Dr. MacQuitty co-founded GenPharm International, a biotech
company developing transgenic animal technology for antibody and other
therapeutic applications. He was CEO of the company from its inception
in 1988 until 1997, when GenPharm's US operations were acquired by
Medarex. GenPharm's European operations were spun out in 1995 and went
public in Europe in 1998 as Pharming BV. Dr. MacQuitty has an MA in
Chemistry from Oxford University, a PhD in Chemistry from the University
of Sussex (UK), and an MBA from Stanford. He has served on the Board of
the Biotechnology Industry Organization and on the Boards of several
private biotechnology companies in the US, including Adiana, Entelos,
Guava, Hydra, Iconix, Labcyte, ParAllele, Quantum Dot and Sunesis
Pharmaceuticals. He was also a Board member of Sosei, a Japanese
biotechnology firm now listed on the Tokyo Stock Exchange. Profile
