CHUCK BARBO is CEO of Shurgard Storage, Inc. A graduate of the University of Washington, he founded the real estate investment firm of Barbo-Daniels Co. in 1971. Realizing the growth potential of mini- storage warehouses the firm grew quickly in the 1970's, changing its name to Shurgard Storage. The company raised over $600 million in equity from over 80,000 individual investors invested in 24 separate real estate limited partnerships, sponsored by Shurgard. In March 1994, a consolidation of 17 of these limited partnerships was completed and a single, publicly traded REIT (Real Estate Investment Trust) was formed. Currently, Shurgard trades on the NYSE under the symbol 'SHU.' Shurgard has already established a presence in Europe, and has plans for further expansion there. Profile
