CHARLES E. BUGG is Chairman of the Board and Chief Executive Officer of
BioCryst Pharmaceuticals, Inc., in Birmingham, Alabama. Prior to joining
the company full time in December 1993, Dr. Bugg had been with the
University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB) since 1968, having served as
Director of the Center for Macromolecular Crystallography, Associate
Director of the Comprehensive Cancer Center, and Professor of
Biochemistry. He continues to hold the position of Professor Emeritus in
Biochemistry and Molecular Genetics at UAB. Dr. Bugg received his BS
degree from Duke University in 1962, his PhD in Physical Chemistry from
Rice University in 1965, and joined the faculty at UAB after completing
two years of postdoctoral study at the California Institute of
Technology. He also spent two years as a Visiting Professor at the
