BARCLAY KNAPP is President and Chief Executive Officer and one of the
founders of NTL, Inc. He has guided NTL from its formation in 1993 to
its present position as one of the largest and fastest start-ups in
history. Prior to starting NTL, Mr. Barclay was one of the founders of
Cellular Communications, Inc. (CCI). CCI was a pioneer in the US
cellular telephone industry, becoming the first company to go public in
1986 after attracting initial capital from the Rockefeller family and
Capital Cities/ABC, among others. Largely under Mr. Barclay's
leadership, CCI grew to become one of the most successful companies in
the business, leading the industry in innovations such as pricing and
packaging, customer retention, and retail centers. CCI grew to 1.25
million customers by the time of its sale to Airtouch Communications,
Inc. in 1996 for over $2.5 billion. Prior to CCI, he was with Planning
Research Corporation in McLean, VA where he was involved in research on
guidance systems for the Cruise Missile program and the interworking of
military communications systems. Mr. Barclay holds a BA in Mathematics
from the John Hopkins University, where he is now a member of the Board
of Trustees, and an MBA from the Harvard Business School. Profile
