WILLIAM MATTHEWS, PhD, is Chief Executive Officer and President,
Deltagen, Inc. Mr. Matthews is a co-Founder of Deltagen, Inc. He was
appointed President in 1997 and is a member of the Board of Directors.
Dr. Matthews became President and Chief Executive Officer of Deltagen in
1998. Prior to joining Deltagen, Dr. Matthews worked at Genentech, Inc.
as a scientist in the departments of molecular biology and molecular
oncology, where he established and ran a program in stem cell biology.
Dr. Matthews received his PhD in Cell Biology from SouthWestern Medical
School in Dallas, followed by postdoctoral fellowships at Harvard
Medical School and Princeton University. While at Harvard, Dr. Matthews
studied mechanisms of protein degradation in the laboratory of Dr.
Alfred Goldberg. At Princeton, Dr. Matthews conducted research on
hematopoietic stem cell development in the laboratory of Dr. Ihor
