WAYNE T. SMITH joined Community Health Systems, Inc. in January 1997 as
President of the company. In April 1997 he was named CEO, and in
February 2001 he was named Chairman of the Board. Prior to Joining CHS,
Mr. Smith spent 23 years at Humana, most recently as President and Chief
Operating Officer from 1993 to mid-1996. He held a wide variety of
senior management positions at Humana including Executive Vice President
of Health Care Operations, President of the Health Care Division,
President of the Group Health Division and Executive Vice President of
the Central Region. Before joining Humana in 1973, Mr. Smith spent four
years as a Captain in the U.S. Army Medical Services Corps. Profile
