Venture Capital Investing: Matthew Growney – Motorola Ventures

MATTHEW I. GROWNEY is a co-Founder and Managing Director of Motorola Ventures, based in Cambridge, Massachusetts. His role is to actively review, invest, and manage the global minority equity opportunities strategic to Motorola's core and emerging businesses including communications and embedded solutions. Such key areas of investment include interactive television, home networking, personal area networks, energy solutions and embedded software. Prior to co-founding Motorola Ventures, he successfully completed three diverse positions as a Commodities Buyer with Motorola's Land Mobile Product Sector, Corporate Development Analyst at Nippon Motorola Limited in Tokyo, Japan, and as the Business Analyst for Motorola's Corporate Strategy -Business Development office. His primary responsibilities included management of unsolicited deal flow, investment tracking, and merger and acquisition analysis. Transactions in which Mr. Growney participated include the acquisitions of Indala (Motorola's current Bistatix technology), Pro-log Computer (part of Motorola's Computer Group), and the equity investment in Starfish (of Motorola's PCS Smart & Connected Group). In 1999, Mr. Growney also conducted cyber-law, e-commerce and domain name legal review on behalf of HSD Ernst & Young- France in Paris, France. Mr. Growney has studied C++ Programming at Harvard University and International Civil Law at the University of San Jose in Costa Rica. He graduated from Michigan State University and possesses a Juris Doctor degree from the New England School of Law in Boston. He sits on the Boards of Xanboo and Sportvision (creator of NFL's Yellow 1st & Ten Line). He also sits on the Board of Advisors for the Global Venture Network in New York City and Shanghai, as well as Capital Venue of Boston. Additionally, he is Vice President of the Corporate Venturing Consortium for MIT's Sloan School EDP program. Outside of Motorola, he is a Board Director for TodoBebe, a young media company serving young families throughout Latin America and involved in various charities serving Boston's homeless. Profile
