TRISTRAM CARY is the Managing Director of Getmapping.com. He is a
Chartered Engineer and Co-founder of the Company. He started his career
as a Navigating Officer in the Royal Navy where he served for 10 years
in frigates, submarines and fast patrol boats. He then worked in the
defence industry in systems engineering, project management and general
management roles, specialising in naval command and control systems. He
was the Project Director of the Type 23 Command System, at a time when
it was the Navy's largest ever software development program. In 1994, he
joined the newly privatised National Remote Sensing Centre (NRSC), whose
mission was to make commercial use of the data from the European Space
Agency's Earth Observation satellites. Initially, he was the Engineering
Director of the NRSC before becoming its Marketing Director. It was in
this latter role that he observed that there was a large potential
market for aerial photography if it could be owned and marketed by a
