Trevor Furlong – Mersey Docks & Harbour Co (mdk.l)

(P.T.) TREVOR FURLONG is Managing Director and Chief Executive of The Mersey Docks and Harbour Company, which owns and operates the Port of Liverpool and the Medway Ports of Sheerness and Chatham. The Mersey Docks and Harbour Company is also the statutory harbour authority for the Mersey and is responsible for the conservancy of the River Medway. The Mersey Docks and Harbour Company has extensive interests in Irish Sea shipping including operation of the trading sector's major lift-on lift-off container shipping line, Coastal Container Line, and B.G. Freight Line which serves Northern Europe, U.K. and Ireland. The Company also operates port facilities in Belfast, Dublin and Cardiff. At Liverpool, L60 million is being invested in port developments including two new river berths for Irish Sea roll-on-roll-off ferries and a 70 acre expansion of the port area with the provision of nearly 1 million sq. ft. of warehousing and light industrial units. At Medway, acquired by Mersey Docks in October, 1993, the Company is developing a L35 million berth, storage and distribution complex for fruit, plus an inland produce terminal. Mr. Furlong has been Managing Director and Chief Executive of The Mersey Docks and Harbour Company since 1984 and has been the main driving force behind its substantial development. MD & HC is now ranked among the top 500 companies in the U.K. Having joined The Mersey Docks and Harbour Board in May 1957, Mr. Furlong contributed to all aspects of the Finance Division's responsibilities including the Capital Reconstruction of 1971 from which the present Mersey Docks and Harbour Company emanated. In 1973 Mr. Furlong joined the Operations Division of the Company as Controller Finance and was appointed General Manager, Operations Division in 1978. Two years later in 1980, he became Cargo Operations Director and in 1982 widened his responsibilities as Port Services Director, encompassing areas of the Company's activities which included Cargo Operations, Marine Services, Engineering and Personnel. Within the national spectrum of the U.K. ports industry, Mr. Furlong is Chairman of The United Kingdom Major Ports Group Limited. He is a Fellow of the Certified Corporate Accountants, Companion of the British Institute of Management and Fellow of the Chartered Institute of Transport.
