Timothy John Bowdler was born Wolverhampton on 16 May 1947. He lives in Edinburgh and is married with two daughters.
An engineering graduate of Birmingham University with an MBA from London Business School, Mr. Bowdler spent early part of career in manufacturing sector before moving into publishing at the beginning of 1994. After training as a production engineer, he progressed through a series of managerial appointments in commercial and marketing roles leading to general management. Prior to entering the newspaper industry, he worked for Cape plc as divisional managing director of their building and architectural product companies. Mr. Bowdler joined Johnston Press plc in January 1994 as Group Managing Director Designate, taking up the role in April of that year, and was appointed Chief Executive in September 1997. He is the immediate Past-President of the Newspaper Society (President 1 July 2002-30 June 2003), Member of the Council of The Newspaper Society, and a Director of The Press Standards Board of Finance Limited.
