ROBERT C. WOODWORTH is President and CEO of Pulitzer Inc., which
operates 14 daily newspapers, including the St. Louis Post-Dispatch and
the Arizona Daily Star (Tucson) as well as several weekly publications
and various E-media ventures. He has been in the newspaper industry for
more than 20 years. His experience includes senior management
responsibility for groups of newspapers with two major chains, Knight
Ridder and Capital Cities/ABC, a subsidiary of The Walt Disney Company.
Prior to being named President and Chief Executive Officer of Pulitzer
Inc. in January of 1999, Mr. Woodworth was Vice President, Newspapers,
at Knight Ridder, a position he assumed in July 1997 when Knight Ridder
purchased a number of newspapers from the Capital Cities/ABC subsidiary
of The Walt Disney Company. In that position, he was responsible for
nine Knight Ridder newspapers, including properties in St. Paul,
Minnesota; Fort Worth, Texas; and Kansas City, Missouri. Mr. Woodworth
was publisher of the Kansas City Star and Senior Vice President, Metro
Newspapers, for Capital Cities/ABC before joining Knight Ridder. In his
Senior Vice President role, Mr. Woodworth also oversaw business
operations of the Fort Worth Star-Telegram, and smaller community
shoppers in the Midwest and California. He worked for Capital Cities for
more than 20 years. During that time, he was Executive Vice
President/General Manager of the Star-Telegram; and President and
Publisher of the Kansas City Star. He was active with the United Way in
both Kansas City and Forth Worth. He served as a member of the Board of
Directors and played a leadership role in the annual fund-raising
campaigns in both cities. While in Kansas City he served on the Board of
the Greater Kansas City Community Foundation. He was also a founding
director of the Partnership for Children, a collaboration of the United
Way and the Community Foundation for the benefit of children in the
Kansas City area. Mr. Woodworth earned an MBA in 1973 from the Darden
School of Business at the University of Virginia, and a BA in economics
from Allegheny College in 1969. He continues to be involved in community
efforts. He currently serves on the board of the United Way of Greater
St. Louis and Character Plus. He also serves on the Board of Trustees
and the Capital Campaign Committee for Allegheny College. Profile
