PHIL WHITE is Chief Executive of National Express Group PLC. Born and
educated in Sheffield, Phil White attended Leeds University before
qualifying as Chartered Accountant with Deloitte, Haskins and Sells (now
known as Coopers & Lybrand) in Liverpool. Phil began his career in the
bus industry as Executive Accountant at South Yorkshire PTE and in 1981
he moved to West Yorkshire PTE where he became Finance Strategy Manager.
Four years later he became Executive Development Controller involved in
setting up Yorkshire Rider following the deregulation of the bus
industry. In 1986 he became Finance Director of Yorkshire Rider and was
later appointed Group Finance Director following the management
/employee buyout in 1988. Yorkshire Rider was acquired by Badgerline in
1994 and Phil then joined West Midlands Travel (WMT) as Finance Director
where he subsequently became Chief Executive. WMT was acquired by
National Express Group in 1995 and Phil was invited to join the Board in
January 1996. He was appointed Group Chief executive one year later.
Aged 48, Phil is married to Carol and lives in the Yorkshire Dales. He
has two grown up children from a previous marriage. An ardent supporter
of Sheffield Wednesday, he collects Victorian oil paintings and enjoys
a wide range of music including blues and soundtracks from films.
