DR. NORMAN E. GAUT is Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of PictureTel
Corporation. Dr. Gaut is a pioneer in the videoconferencing industry,
having served on PictureTel's Board of Directors since the company's
inception in 1984. He became Chairman of the Board in April 1987. He was
appointed CEO and President in January 1986. Dr. Gaut retired from
PictureTel in June 1998, while remaining a Board member. In September
1999, he returned as Chairman, CEO and President. Prior to joining
PictureTel, Dr. Gaut co-founded Environmental Research and Technology.
He served as President of that company from 1977 to 1985. Dr. Gaut is a
member of the Massachusetts High Tech Council and Massachusetts Software
Council. He also serves on the Board of Directors of Teloquent
Corporation, is a trustee of Boston University, and serves as Chairman
of the Board of Continuity Solutions, Inc., an Internet software
company. Dr. Gaut holds a Doctorate in Planetary Physics and a Master's
degree in Meteorology from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. He
earned a Bachelor's degree in Physics from the University of California,
