Milton Ward – Cyprus Amax Minerals Co (cym)

MILTON WARD was appointed Chairman, President and CEO of Cyprus Minerals Company in May, 1992. In November, 1993, Cyprus Minerals merged with AMAX, Inc. and Mr. Ward became Chairman, President and CEO of the newly merged company, Cyprus Amax Minerals Company. In June, 1998, he became Vice Chairman and a member of the Board of Directors of Kinross Gold Corp. Mr. Ward earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Mining Engineering and a Master of Science degree in Engineering at the University of Alabama. He also earned a Master of Business Administration at the University of New Mexico and a Doctor of Science at Imperial College at the University of London. Additionally, he was awarded an Honorary Doctor of Engineering from the Colorado School of Mines. He began his mining career in 1955 with San Manuel Copper Corp. in Arizona, spending five years in engineering and supervisory positions. In 1966, Mr. Ward joined United Nuclear-Homestake Partners for Homestake Mining Company as general manager. Later, he was appointed Vice President of Operations for Ranchers Exploration and Development Corporation before joining Freeport Minerals Company in 1974. When he left Freeport-McMoRan, he was President and COO and a director, as well as a member of the Office of the Chairman. Mr. Ward is active in civic and academic affairs and is on the Executive Board Advisory Council as well as National Executive Vice President of the Boy Scouts of America. At the Mining Congress in Washington, D.C., he formerly served as Chairman and Director and is currently a director of its successor, the National Mining Association. He received several awards of the American Institute of Mining Engineers (AIME) and is past president and a member of the executive committee of the Mining and Metallurgical Society of America. Mr. Ward is a fellow of the Institute of Mining and Metallurgy and a recipient of its Gold Medal. Additionally, he is a member of the prestigious National Academy of Engineers. And, he also serves on the National Research Council's Board on Earth Sciences and Resources. He has held directorships and officer positions in a number of business, civic and educational organizations such as the International Copper Association, Western Regional Council, Mineral Information Institute and the Council of the Americas. Mr. Ward also serves as a director and a life member of the National Mining Hall of Fame and Museum and is a director of the Smithsonian Institution's National Museum of Natural History in Washington, D.C.
