MARK SKALETSKY has been Chairman, President and Chief Executive Officer
of Essential Therapeutics, Inc., since March 2001. Prior to joining
Essential, Mr. Skaletsky was President and Chief Executive Officer of
GelTex Pharmaceuticals, Inc., from May 1993 to January 2001. From May
1988 to April 1993 Mr. Skaletsky was President, Chief Executive Officer
and Chairman of Enztech, Inc./OPTA Food Ingredients, Inc. From 1981 to
1988 he was President and Chief Operating Officer (1982 to 1988) and
member of the Board of Directors (1983 to 1988) for Biogen, Inc. From
1974 to 1980 he was Manager, R&D Financial Planning, Director,
Marketing, Planning and Business Development for Bristol-Myers
Pharmaceutical Division. Mr. Skaletsky is a member of the Board of
Directors and Past Chairman at Biotechnology Industry Organization; the
Board of Directors at Isis Pharmaceuticals, ImmunoGen, ConjuChem and a
