JOSEPH L. BOUTIN is currently President and CEO of Merchants Bank and
Merchants Bancshares, Inc. Prior to his October 24, 1994 appointment, he
had been with the Howard Bank, a subsidiary of Banknorth Group, Inc. for
25 years. He served as its President and CEO from 1989 to 1994. His
experience includes work in audit, human resources, branch
administration and commercial lending. He has been extremely active in
many community and banking organizations. These include: Trustee
(Chair), Vermont Student Assistance Corporation, Winooski, VT; Trustee,
Vermont Public Radio, Coichester, VT; Trustee, General Education
Foundation, Burlington, VT; Former Director, Fletcher Allen health Care,
Burlington, VT; Former Trustee, United Way of Cittenden County; Former
Director and Treasurer, Greater Burlington Industrial Corporation;
Former Director, Rutland Regional Medical Center; National Banking
Advisor, American Bankers Association, 1982-1988; Former Director
(Chair), Vermont Achievement Center, Rutland VT; Former Director,
President Rutland Industrial Development Corporation; and Former
Director, President, Howard Mental Health, Inc. Mr. Boutin graduated
from St. Michael's College in 1969 with a B.A. degree in economics and
served in the United States Army. He is married and has four children. Profile
