Joel F. Martin, PhD, is Director, President and CEO of Quantum Dot
Corporation. Dr. Martin co-founded Quantum Dot Corporation in November
1998. Quantum Dot is developing nanotechnology for use in drug discovery
and diagnostics. Dr. Martin is also a former Director, co-Founder and
President and CEO of Argonaut Technologies Inc., the world's leading
supplier of tools for automated drug discovery. At Argonaut, Dr.
Martin's team developed and shipped multiple commercial products within
18 months. These products included a sophisticated automated
combinatorial synthesizer that was developed based on the input of
Argonaut's product development consortium ' a collaborative consortium
of eight of the world's leading drug companies. Prior to Argonaut, Dr.
Martin was an Associate at Avalon Ventures, where he was a key
contributor in the development and financing of Pharmacopeia Inc. and
IDUN Pharmaceuticals. He was also a member of the early scientific team
at Isis Pharmaceuticals. Prior to his involvement in biotechnology, Dr.
Martin was an Assistant Professor of Radiology at UC San Diego, where he
invented a commonly used MRI imaging device. Dr. Martin serves on the
Industrial Advisory Board for the Chemistry Department of the University
of California, San Diego and is an Advisory Board member for the Samuel
Zell and Robert H. Lurie Institute for Entrepreneurial Studies at the
University of Michigan. He is a frequent lecturer at the University of
Michigan Business School and a speaker at the Haas Business School at
the University of California, Berkeley and the MIT Breakfast Series. Dr.
Martin holds a PhD in Physical Chemistry from UC San Diego and an MBA
