JAMES D. HOGAN joined Sovereign Bancorp, Inc., in April, 2001, as its
Chief Financial Officer with responsibilities for all financial,
accounting, treasury and reporting functions. Mr. Hogan also serves as a
member of Sovereign's Office of the Chairman. He graduated from Miami
University in Ohio with a Bachelor of Science degree in Accounting and
is a Certified Public Accountant. He came to Sovereign from Firstar
Bancorp where he served as Executive Vice President and Controller. He
started his banking career in 1970 as a bank audit specialist with
Coopers & Lybrand. He also served as Controller of the Idaho First
National Bank prior to joining Firstar in 1987. Mr. Hogan is a member of
the Financial Managers Society and serves on the Boards of the United
Way of Berks County, the Reading Public Museum Foundation and the YMCA
