EDWARD T. MAGGIO is President and Chief Executive Officer of Cengent
Therapeutics Inc., a drug discovery company focused on diabetes/obesity,
cancer, and infectious disease. He is the former President and CEO of
ImmunoPharmaceutics, Inc., which developed a number of endothelin
antagonists, including Encysive Pharmaceuticals' Sitaxsentan, now in
Phase III trials for cardiovascular disease. Dr. Maggio has been a
founder and Board member of seven public and private life science
companies in San Diego in the pharmaceutical, human and veterinary in
vitro diagnostics, hollow fiber cell culture device manufacturing,
biological research reagent, structure-based vaccine, and intranasal
drug delivery areas. He received his PhD from the University of
Michigan. He was an NIH postdoctoral fellow at the University of
California, San Francisco (UCSF) Department of Pharmaceutical Chemistry
and is concurrently on the teaching faculty of San Francisco State
University. After a number of years at the diagnostics divisions of
Syntex and Boehringer Ingelheim, he joined Scripps-Miles, Inc. as Vice
President of R&D, and concurrently served as an adjunct faculty member
at the Scripps Clinic and Research Foundation's Department of Academic
Affairs. In addition to serving on the University of California, San
Diego Dean's Board of Advisors for Biological Sciences, he is a member
of the Board of Fellows of Polytechnic University, New York. He also
serves on the Board of Advocates at Baylor University's School of
Engineering and Computer Science. In prior years, he served as a member
of the UCSF Molecular Design Institute Advisory Board and as a member of
the Chancellor's Advisory Board for California State University, San
Marcos, the Sharpe-Rees Stealy Hospitals Foundation Board, and the La
Jolla Cancer Research Foundation Board. Dr. Maggio has edited and co-
authored a number of books, book chapters and scientific articles in the
biotechnology area and is an inventor on more than two dozen issued and
pending US and foreign patents in the life sciences field. Profile
