DAVE SCHAEFFER isChief Executive Officer of Cogent Communications, Inc.
Mr. Schaeffer has successfully founded and operated six businesses in
addition to Cogent Communications. These businesses include the second
largest livery and ground transportation enterprise in the United
States, where he operated as President and CEO. He also founded a
property and casualty underwriter, developed 46 commercial real estate
projects in the Washington, DC, metro area, and developed 170 channels
of SMR systems in numerous markets. Each of these systems was sold to
entities that have since become Nextel Communications. He founded and
still owns a mid-sized facilities-based paging carrier in the mid-
Atlantic region which has grown to over 40,000 subscribers. Prior to
founding Cogent Communications, Mr. Schaeffer was the sole Founder of
Pathnet Inc. Mr. Schaeffer's diverse background has allowed him to build
entrepreneurial management teams capable of building and managing
national networks. Mr. Schaeffer has a BS in Physics from the University
of Maryland and was a PhD candidate in Economics at the University of
