Craig R. Smith – Guilford Pharmaceuticals Inc (glfd)

CRAIG R. SMITH, M.D., co-founded Guilford Pharmaceuticals, Inc. in July and began his service to the company as a Director. He was elected President and CEO in August 1993 and was appointed Chairman of the Board in January 1994. Prior to joining the company, Dr. Smith was Senior Vice President for Business and Market Development at Centocor, Inc., a biotechnology company, where he participated in the establishment of business and negotiating strategies for the company. Dr. Smith joined Centocor in 1988 as Vice President of Clinical Research beginning his career in the pharmaceutical industry after serving on the Faculty of the Department of Medicine at Johns Hopkins Medical School for 13 years. During his term at Johns Hopkins, Dr. Smith founded and directed the Division of Internal Medicine and the Johns Hopkins Pharmacoepidemiology Program. He received his B.A. degree in Biology from the University of the South in 1968, his M.D. from the State University of New York at Buffalo in 1972, and completed his Internship and Residency in Internal Medicine at The Johns Hopkins Hospital in 1975. In July 1997, Dr. Smith was named Maryland's Entrepreneur of the Year in the Technology division. Dr. Smith serves on the Boards of the Maryland Chapter of the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation, MD-Bio, a nonprofit quasi-public corporation supporting early stage biotechnology companies in Maryland, and the Greater Baltimore High Tech Council.
