BRUCE A. SMITH is Chairman, President, and Chief Executive
Officer of Tesoro Petroleum Corporation. Mr. Smith joined Tesoro
as Chief Financial Officer, became President of the company's
exploration and production business, and in 1995, was named
President and Chief Executive Officer and elected to the Board of
Directors. Previously, Mr. Smith was Corporate Vice President and
Treasurer of Valero Energy Corporation and Vice President for
Continental Illinois National Bank and Trust Company of Chicago.
He also served in the U.S. Army and was a Financial Analyst at
Ford Motor Company. Mr. Smith earned a degree in Liberal Arts
from Westminster College (Fulton, Missouri) in 1965 and an MBA
degree from the University of Kansas in 1967. He is on the Boards
of Noble Energy, Inc. and the National Petrochemical & Refiners
Association. He is a member of the National Petroleum Council and
serves on the Executive Committee of the San Antonio United Way.
In the past, he has served on the Boards of San Antonio Sports
Foundation, University of the Incarnate Word, Junior Achievement
