William Thomas Stephens

William Thomas Stephens is the President and Chief Executive Officer of
MacMillan Bloedel, a position he has held since September, 1997. He has
led that company’s decision to phase-out clearcutting and has been
encouraging increased employee involvement in decision-making at all
levels of the company. From 1986 to 1996, Stephens was Chairman, CEO
and President of Manville Corporation, headquartered in Denver Colorado.
(The title of Chairman was added in 1993.) He started his career with
Olinkraft Inc., a predecessor of Manville Forest Products, in 1963 as an
engineer. He held a variety of positions with Olinkraft and Manville
Forest Products before becoming President and CEO of Manville Forest
Products in 1982. From 1985 to 1986 he was Executive Vice President and
Chief Financial Officer for Manville Corporation. Stephens is on the
Board of Directors of Putnam Investments of Boston, Qwest Communications
and New Century Energies, both headquartered in Denver. Born in 1942 in
Crossett, Arkansas, Stephens has a Masters Degree in Industrial
Engineering from the University of Arkansas. He enjoys family time with
his wife Alice and with his three daughters and four grandchildren and
his hobbies include duck hunting, boating, trail riding and fishing.
