THEODORE E. MARTIN was elected president and chief executive officer of
Barnes Group Inc. on April 5, 1995. He assumed that position on July 1,
1995, becoming only the third chief executive outside the Barnes family
to lead the company since it was founded in 1857. Prior to his
appointment, Martin was executive vice president-operations for Barnes
Group, with operating responsibility for the company’s three business
groups — Associated Spring, Bowman Distribution and Barnes Aerospace.
He has been a member of the company’s Board of Directors since December
15, 1993. Martin joined Barnes Group in October, 1990, as group vice
president of Associated Spring. He was promoted to president and COO of
Associated Spring in February, 1992, and was responsible for the group’s
worldwide precision spring and metal parts manufacturing operations in
five countries. Martin came to Barnes Group from Herman Miller, Inc., a
manufacturer of office equipment in Zeeland, Michigan, where he served
as corporate vice president of manufacturing. From 1981 to 1988, he held
a number of top management positions with Allied-Signal, the last as
president of its Fram Canada manufacturing and distribution business.
Earlier in his career, Martin held a variety of management positions
with General Electric, including its aircraft engine business. He earned
an MBA degree in finance from the University of Hawaii and a BS degree
in economics from Syracuse University. He serves on the Board of
Directors of Ingersoll-Rand Company, Unisys Corporation and the Greater
Hartford Urban League. He is a Trustee of Syracuse University and a
Trustee of Utica College.
