Marshall M. Sloane

MARSHALL M. SLOANE is Chairman of the Board and Chief Executive Officer
of Century Bancorp, Inc., the parent company of Century Bank and Trust
Company, a banking institution with branch offices located presently in
16 cities and towns. Mr. Sloane was born in Somerville, Massachusetts, a
suburb of Boston. He attended Somerville High School as well as Boston
University and received an honorary degree, Doctor of Humane Letters,
from Salem State College in 1988, as well as an Honorary Doctor of Laws
degree from Southern New England School of Law in 1999. He served in the
U.S. Navy during World War II. Well-known in banking circles with his
views quoted in The Wall Street Journal and The New York Times, Mr.
Sloane has concomitantly been active extensively in community affairs
and has been widely recognized for his accomplishments. Among his awards
are included the Sword of Hope Award by the American Cancer Society; The
Silver Beaver Award; The Silver Antelope Award and The Silver Buffalo
Award, Scouting’s highest award, from the Boy Scouts of America; the
Theodore L. Storer Memorial Award for outstanding public service in the
Boston area; designation as a Baden Powell Fellow by the King of Sweden
for furthering the development of the World Organization of the Scout
Movement; the Israel Peace Medal; the Israel Bonds Salvador Dali Menorah
Award; the Mortimer Schiff Award; and the Shofar Award from the National
Jewish Committee on Scouting; the Allah-O-Akbar ribbon and medallion by
the National Islamic Committee on Scouting; the St. George emblem for
service to Catholic Youth; the Religious Heritage of America Business
and Professional Award, given to those who, by practical application of
religious principles in their daily lives and the lives of their
industries or professions, have made an impact for good on national or
community life; the Boston University, School of Management, Alumni
Award for Distinguished Service to the Community; election by the Boston
Junior Chamber of Commerce as one of Boston’s Ten Outstanding Young Men;
and appointment by President Lyndon B. Johnson to the Small Business
Advisory Council. In 1994, His Eminence Bernard Cardinal Law, on behalf
of His Holiness, Pope John Paul II, conferred upon Mr. Sloane the
Knighthood of St. Gregory the Great. In addition to his work with Boy
Scouts of America, both national and local, and as a member of the Board
of Trustees of the Somerville Historical Society, Somerville Museum, the
Board of Trustee of Catholic Charities of Boston and The Catholic
Foundation of the Archdiocese of Boston, Mr. Sloane also serves as a
Member of the Corporation of Partners Health Care Systems (formerly MGH)
and Perkins School for the Blind. Mr. Sloane is a member of the Board of
Trustees of Boston University and serves as Chairman of the Board of
Visitors of the Boston University Henry M. Goldman Graduate School of
Dentistry. He is a member of Massachusetts Bankers Association and
serves on the Government Relations Council of the American Bankers
Association.
