JOHN C.C. FAN is the Chairman, Chief Executive Officer and President of
Kopin Corporation, which he founded in 1984. Kopin manufactures
telecommunications components and microdisplays for consumer
electronics. Dr. Fan has authored more than 170 scientific and
engineering publications, has edited three books and has been granted 50
patents related to his work with semiconductor materials and devices.
Born in Shanghai, China, and raised in Hong Kong, Dr. Fan came to the
United States at age 18 to attend the University of California,
Berkeley. He received his Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering
with Highest Honors from Berkeley in 1966. Dr. Fan’s academic excellence
earned him a fellowship to Harvard University, where he earned his
Master’s and PhD in Applied Physics. Between 1972 and 1985, Dr. Fan led
the Electronics Materials Group at the Massachusetts Institute of
Technology’s Lincoln Laboratory, where he conducted research on thin-
film optical coatings, wafer engineering and on methods for combining
dissimilar semiconductor materials.
