James F. Orr

JAMES F. ORR III is Chairman and CEO of UNUM Corporation and UNUM Life
Insurance Company of America, and chief executive officer of Colonial
Companies, Inc. Orr joined UNUM in 1986 as president and chief operating
officer and was named president and chief executive officer in September
1987. He was appointed chairman in January 1988. Orr has broad
experience in the financial services industry. He began his career with
a major Boston bank and spent several years in the securities industry
in New York and Boston. Orr was a principal in a Boston-based, privately
held investment firm and then, prior to joining UNUM, he spent over 10
years with Connecticut Bank & Trust, most recently as executive vice
president and treasurer. Orr is a member of the board of trustees of the
Rockefeller Foundation. He is also a director for the Nashua
Corporation, and a trustee for Bates College and the Committee for
Economic Development. He also serves as chair for the Maine Medical
Center Foundation. Orr is a member of the Business Roundtable and a
regular member of The Conference Board. Orr is chairman of the National
Alliance of Business and is a director of the S.S. Heubner Foundation
for Insurance Education and the Maine Coalition for Excellence in
Education. Orr received the 1997 International Insurance Award from the
International Insurance Council. Orr received his bachelor’s degree from
Villanova University in 1965 and a master’s degree in business
administration from Boston University in 1970.
