George F. Schmitt

GEORGE F. SCHMITT is Chairman and Acting Chief Executive Officer of
e.spire Communications, Inc. He was elected to this position in March
2000, after having joined the Board in January 2000. He is also past
Chairman of the Personal Communications Industry Association. Before
joining e.spire, Mr. Schmitt served as President of Omnipoint
Communications Services, LLC and Executive Vice President of Omnipoint
Corporation until February 2000, when VoiceStream Wireless acquired
Omnipoint. He remains a senior consultant to VoiceStream Wireless. Mr.
Schmitt serves on the Board of Directors of e.spire, Sema Group, and
Objective Systems Integrators, and is a General Partner in a Venture
Capital Company Telesoft Partners II. He also is a member of the Board
of Regents of St. Mary’s College and a Board member of the Cancer Hope
Network. Mr. Schmitt has served on numerous non-profit Boards over the
last 30 years and is a native of New York City. He received his Bachelor
of Arts degree from St. Mary’s college in Moraga, CA. He was awarded a
Master’s degree from Stanford University Graduate School of Business,
where he was a Sloan Fellow.
