WILLIAM E. CHILES is President and Chief Executive Officer of Chiles
Offshore Inc. He founded Chiles Offshore in March 1997 which operates
three new state-of-the-art LeTourneau Super 116-C jackups in the US Gulf
of Mexico. Mr. Chiles was Senior Vice President ' Drilling Operations of
Cliffs Drilling Company and President and CEO of Southwestern Offshore
Corporation, a wholly owned subsidiary. The Southwestern Offshore fleet
was sold to Cliffs Drilling Company in May 1996. In September 1996, he
was appointed to the position of Senior Vice President ' Drilling
Operations responsible for the operation of the worldwide fleet
including 14 jackups ' eight in the US Gulf of Mexico, one in Trinidad,
one in Qatar, one in Mexico, one in Columbia, and two in Lake Maracaibo,
Venezuela. In addition, he was responsible for nine land rigs operating
in Venezuela. From 1992 to May 1996, he was President and Chief
Executive Officer of Southwestern Offshore Corporation, a company he
founded in 1992. He has a BBA in Petroleum Land Management from The
University of Texas at Austin and an MBA in Finance and Accounting with
Honors from Southern Methodist University, Dallas. He is involved in
