W. E. Sheriff

W. E. (BILL) SHERIFF has served as Chairman and Chief Executive Officer
of American Retirement Corporation and its predecessors since April
1984. Under his leadership, ARC has become one of the leading companies
in the senior living industry. In May, 1997, ARC became the first
company in its industry to qualify for listing on the NYSE. From 1973
to 1984, Mr. Sheriff served in several management positions for Ryder
System, Inc., including president and chief executive officer of its
Truckstops of America division. Mr. Sheriff serves in various
capacities with several trade organizations. He is a member of the
American Association of Homes and Services for the Aging, the American
Senior Housing Association and the National Association for Senior
Living Industries (NASLI). He has furthered his commitment to the
senior living industry by co-founding The Frist Center at Belmont
University, an education-based learning center designed to provide
education and training for organizations in the senior living
industries. Mr. Sheriff also serves on the boards of various
educational and charitable organizations as well as several private
companies. Mr. Sheriff is a native of Las Cruces, New Mexico and
received a B. S. Degree in 1965 from New Mexico State University.
