Ted English

TED ENGLISH, President and CEO of The TJX Companies, Inc., began his
retail career as a stock boy at Filene’s Basement in downtown Boston in
1969, while attending Xaverian Brothers High School. He worked through
high school and college (Northeastern University) in various capacities
at Filene’s Basement, became a Buyer at Filene’s Basement in 1976 upon
graduation from Northeastern University and joined T.J. Maxx as a Buyer
in January 1983. From 1984 to 1995, Mr. English advanced from Buyer
through several senior merchandise positions at T.J. Maxx. Then in 1995
he directed the successful merger of the T.J. Maxx and Marshalls
merchandise teams under the Marmaxx banner. In 1997 he was promoted to
Executive Vice President of Merchandising at Marmaxx. In 1999 he was
promoted to President and Chief Operating Officer and was appointed to
the Board of Directors of The TJX Companies, Inc. Mr. English was
promoted to President and Chief Executive Officer of The TJX Companies,
Inc. in 2000. He is a member of the Board of Trustees of Xaverian
Brothers High School, the National Council of Northeastern University
and the Board of The Welfare To Work Partnership.
