Russell M. Medford

RUSSELL M. MEDFORD MD, PhD, serves as President and Chief Executive
Officer of AtheroGenics, Inc. Dr. Medford is an established and well-
respected Molecular Biologist and Cardiologist, whose research focuses
on the molecular basis of cardiovascular disease. Dr. Medford’s
commitment to molecular cardiology is evident through the extensive
research he has published and the 11 US patents he holds in the field.
Dr. Medford was previously director of the Molecular Cardiology Research
Center and an Associate Professor of Medicine at Emory University School
of Medicine. Dr. Medford serves on the Program Project Review Committee
of the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute (NHLBI) and is on the
planning committee of the Georgia Biotech Center. He is director of
RenaLogics, Inc. and Inhibitex, Inc., two start-up biotech companies
based in Atlanta, Ga. Dr. Medford received his medical and scientific
training at the Albert Einstein College of Medicine in Bronx, New York.
His training continued at Harvard Medical School in Boston, where he
completed his residency and clinical and research fellowships and later
served as an instructor at health institutions through Harvard,
including Beth Israel Hospital, Children’s Hospital and Brigham and
Women’s Hospital. He is the recipient of the Established Investigator
award from the American Heart Association.
