PETER THORNER is Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of Bradlees, Inc.,
one of the nation’s leading regional discount department store chains
with 104 stores in seven states and total annual sales of $1.4 billion.
Mr. Thorner joined Bradlees as Vice Chairman in March 1995 and served as
President and Chief Operating Officer from June 1995 to December 1996.
At that time he was also elected to the company’s Board of Directors. In
May 1999, he was inducted into the American Institute of Certified
Public Accountants Hall of Fame. A noted Retail Turnaround Strategist
before joining Bradlees, Mr. Thorner served as President, Chief
Operating Officer and Acting Chief Executive Officer of Ames Department
Stores, Inc. He is credited with leading this discount store chain out
of bankruptcy and restoring the company to profitability. Mr. Thorner
joined Ames in 1990, following its Chapter 11 filing, as Executive Vice
President and Chief Financial Officer. He was named Chief Operating
Officer in December 1992, President in February 1993 and served as a
Director from 1992 to 1994. Prior to joining Ames, he was Managing
Director and Chief Financial Officer of Wheelabrator Technologies, Inc.;
Executive Vice President, Chief Financial and Administrative Officer of
Rapid-American Corporation; Executive Vice President and Chief Financial
Officer of Ogden Corporation; and a partner with Deloitte Haskins &
Sells (Deloitte & Touche). Mr. Thorner holds a Bachelor’s degree in
Economics from City University of New York, Brooklyn College and is a
Certified Public Accountant in New York and Louisiana. He is a Board
member of the International Mass Retail Association (IMRA) and the
National Retail Federation (NRF), as well as Chairman of VITAM Youth
Treatment Center in Connecticut.
