MARK BRISTOW, BSc (Hons), PhD, member of GSSA, is the Chief Executive
Officer of Randgold Resources Limited since its inception in October
1995. Mark Bristow began his career as a geologist with Rand Mines
Limited in 1981 and gained experience in chrome, platinum and nickel
geology before joining its international resources division. From 1988,
he was involved in numerous exploration projects, feasibility studies
and joint venture negotiations, as well as the funding and listing of
two mining companies on the Johannesburg Stock Exchange. In 1994 he was
appointed general manager of the resources division of Randgold,
becoming executive director responsible for exploration and new business
later that year. In October 1995, he was appointed Chief Executive of
Randgold Resources Limited when it was established as Randgold’s
international mining and exploration subsidiary. He was one of the first
South Africans to take his company into the emerging African exploration
arena and has been instrumental in building Randgold Resources into a
fully integrated, gold-focused mining and exploration company which was
listed on the London Stock Exchange in 1997. In addition to the above
responsibilities, during the late 1990s he has also directed the re-
engineering of the ore reserve management functions of the gold mines of
the Randgold & Exploration Group and its affiliated gold mining
companies.
