Jack E. Thompson

JACK E. THOMPSON is Chairman, President and Chief Executive Officer of
Homestake Mining Company. He began his career with Homestake in 1981,
with his appointment as General Manager of the McLaughlin mine in
California, which he directed through development and construction to
full production. From May 1988 to July 1992, Mr. Thompson was President
of Homestake International Minerals Ltd., a subsidiary established in
1985 to seek investment opportunities in mineral exploration,
development and mining outside of the United States. In that capacity,
he was responsible for operations, mine development, and acquisitions in
Canada, Chile and other mineral districts of the world. He also
represented Homestake on the operating committee of Kalgoorie
Consolidated Gold Mines Pty Ltd., the management company responsible for
managing and operating Australia’s largest gold mining and milling
complex at Kalgoorlie, Western Australia, which is 50 percent owned by
Homestake. In July 1992 Mr. Thompson was promoted to Executive Vice
President Canada, overseeing the Company’s interests in Canada following
the acquisition of International Corona Corporation. In addition to
being elected an officer of Homestake, he was promoted to the position
of President and CEO of Homestake Canada Inc. in Vancouver, B.C. and
President of Prime Resources Group Inc., a publicly traded company that
is 50.6%-owned by Homestake. On August 9, 1994, he was elected
President, Chief Operating Officer and a member of the Board of
Directors of Homestake Mining Company, and May 14, 1996, he became Chief
Executive Officer of the Company. On July 24, 1998, Mr. Thompson was
also elected Chairman of the Board. Mr. Thompson began his career as a
Mine Engineer with Magma Copper Company, San Manuel Division. He joined
Newmont Services, Ltd. in 1975 as Chief Engineer at the Granduc Copper
Mine in Canada, rising to a position of Resident manager assigned to
dawn Mining Company, a position he held until he joined Homestake Mining
Company in 1981. Mr. Thompson’s professional memberships include the
Society for Mining, Metallurgy, and Exploration (SME), Mining and
Metallurgical Society of America (MMSA), American Institute of Mining
Engineers (AIME), National Mining Association (NMA) and Canadian
Institute of Mining(CIM). He sits on the board of various industry
associations, including the Gold Institute, the World Gold Council, the
National Mining Association and the Western Regional Council. In May
1997, he was elected Chairman of the Gold Institute. He is a Registered
Professional Engineer in the Province of British Columbia and is a past
director of the Mining Association of Canada. He is also a member of the
World Trade Club and The Pacific Union Club of San Francisco. Mr.
Thompson was born in Havana, Cuba and graduated from the University of
Arizona with a Bachelor Science degree in Mining and Engineering. He is
a 1987 graduate of the Stanford University Executive Program and has
attended professional development courses throughout his career. An
Eagle Scout in his youth, e remains an active supporter of scouting.
