AXEL J. UNTERBECK is President and Chief Scientific Officer, Director
and co-Founder of Memory Pharmaceuticals Corp. Previously Head of CNS-
Dementia Research at Bayer Corp, Dr. Unterbeck held various positions
with increasing responsibility within CNS research at Bayer in Germany
and the United States, focusing on drug discovery in the field of
Alzheimer’s dementia, cerebral stroke and head trauma. He and his group
were instrumental in the pre-clinical development of metrifonate
(ProMem), a new generation acetylcholinesterase inhibitor for the
treatment of dementia, including Alzheimer’s disease, and Bay x 3702, a
novel neuroprotective agent, now in phase II clinical trials for
cerebral stroke. Prior to joining Bayer, Dr. Unterbeck was a member of
the research group lead by Professor Benno Mueller-Hill and Professor
Konrad Beyreuther at the University of Cologne that achieved in 1987 the
first full-length cloning of the human amyloid precursor protein (APP)
gene related to Alzheimer’s disease. This achievement enabled
researchers in this field to identify possible pharmacological targets
for the treatment and diagnosis of Alzheimer’s disease. He is the co-
author of more than 30 scientific publications and is listed as an
inventor on numerous patents. He received his PhD in Molecular Biology
and Molecular Genetics at the Institute for Genetics in Cologne in 1986,
and an MS/BS in Biology and Molecular Genetics from the University of
bonn in 1982.
