CARL W. RAUSCH is Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of Biopure
Corporation, a 160-employee biopharmaceutical company headquartered in
Massachusetts with facilities in Pennsylvania and New Hampshire. Under
Mr. Rausch's leadership, Biopure has become a leading developer,
manufacturer and marketer of a new class of intravenous solutions,
called oxygen therapeutics, that sustain blood volume and deliver oxygen
to the body's tissues. An expert in high technology purification
processes, Mr. Rausch spearheaded development of patented purification
and molecular cross-linking techniques that are core to Biopure's

therapeutic for veterinary use. Biopure is investigating a similar
product for human use in critical care situations, such as surgery and
trauma, and to treat ischemic conditions, such as heart attack, stroke,
and hypoxic tumors. Prior to co-founding Biopure, Mr. Rausch served as
Vice President, Preparative and Process Chromatography at the Waters
Associates Division of Millipore Corporation, where he was responsible
for developing and establishing a process scale chromatographic
separation (purification) capability for industrial separations. He
joined Waters Associates in 1975, where as Senior Technology
Manager/Senior Process Engineer he commercially developed a new column
separation technology for the company. Mr. Rausch holds 11 patents. His
research and reviews have been published in various journals for
organizations such as the VIth Congress of the International Society for
Animal Clinical Biochemistry, the American Society for Biochemistry and
