BOB CARPENTER is President and Chief Operating Officer at Dollar General
Corporation, headquartered in Goodlettsville, Tennessee. Mr. Carpenter
joined Dollar General in May 1981 as Vice President of Administration
and General Counsel. He attained the position of President and COO in
2000, after holding the positions of Executive Vice President, Chief
Administrative Officer and Chief Counsel. Prior to joining the company,
he was the Assistant General Counsel for the First American National
Bank, where he had served in various management positions since 1974.
Mr. Carpenter served in the US Navy from 1970 to 1974. Mr. Carpenter
holds a degree in Finance from the University of Tennessee and earned
his Doctorate of Law degree from the Nashville School of Law in 1978. He
is a member of the American Bar Association. Mr. Carpenter is a Director
of the Boards of NashvilleREAD, Nashville Housing Fund and Get Well
Centers, Inc., and is a Director of the Middle Tennessee Council of the
