William J. Schoen – Health Management Associates (hma)

WILLIAM J. SCHOEN is the Chairman of Health Management Associates, Inc. Mr. Schoen joined the company Board of Directors in February 1983 and in the same year became President. He became Chairman of the Board and Chief Executive Officer in April 1986. Mr. Schoen recently retired as Chief Executive Officer, but remains a corporate officer of the company. He will continue to oversee the company's strategic direction and maintain his ties with the financial community. Mr. Schoen was instrumental in the formation of HMA's top executive team. The executives' shared vision and commitment to the HMA philosophy has contributed to the company's consistent pattern of excellence for nearly two decades. From 1982 to 1987, Mr. Schoen was Chairman of Commerce National Bank of Naples, Florida. From 1973 to 1981, he was President, Chief Operating Officer, and Chief Executive Officer of the F & M Schaefer Corporation, a consumer products company. From 1971 to 1973, Mr. Schoen was President of the Pierce Glass subsidiary of Indian Head, Inc., a diversified company. In addition to serving on Health Management Associates' Board, Mr. Schoen also serves on the Board of Directors of The Horace Mann Companies and on the Board of Governors of the Federation of American Health Systems. Mr. Schoen has BS and MBA degrees from the University of Southern California. He served in the United States Marine Corps from 1953 to 1956. He is married and has four children. Profile
