HOWARD B. BERNICK is President, Chief Executive Officer and a Director
of Alberto-Culver Company, a $1.8 billion manufacturer and marketer of
beauty supplies and household products. A 1973 graduate of the
University of Toronto, Mr. Bernick began his career with Wood Gundy
Limited in Toronto. He moved to Chicago in 1974 to join the First Boston
Corporation, and in 1977 came to the Alberto-Culver Company as Director
of Profit Planning and Acquisitions. He was promoted to Vice President,
Corporate Development in 1979; to Group Vice President and Chief
Financial Officer in 1981; and to Executive Vice President in 1985. A
Director of the company since 1986, he was named to the post of
President and Chief Operating Officer in 1988 and to his current
position in October, 1994. As President & CEO, in addition to his
responsibility for the company's domestic and international package
goods businesses, and its Sally Beauty Company subsidiary, he has
overall supervision of the company's acquisition efforts. In that latter
role, he has spearheaded the company's acquisitions of Stockholm-based
Cederroth International in 1991, Molnlycke Toiletries in 1995 and St.
Ives Laboratories in 1996, as well as several Sally Beauty Supply
related acquisitions. In the community, Mr. Bernick is a Director of the
Economic Club of Chicago and a Member of the Young Presidents'
Organization. He also serves on the Boards of Directors of the AAR
Corporation, The Chamberlain Group, the Cosmetic, Toiletry & Fragrance
Association and the American Committee for the Weizmann Institute of
Science. He is married to Carol Bernick, who is Vice Chairman of
Alberto-Culver Company and President of Alberto-Culver North America.
