EDWARD E. BERGER is Vice President for Policy, Reimbursement and
External Relations at ABIOMED, Inc., the Danvers Massachusetts-based
developer of mechanical circulatory support devices, including the
AbioCor' Implantable Replacement Heart. His responsibilities in that
position have included oversight of all strategically sensitive
corporate communications, including those relating to public sector
healthcare policy, investor relations and media relations. Dr. Berger
received his graduate education in Political Science at Boston
University, where he held faculty and administrative positions for a
dozen years. He has more than 20 years of experience in the private
healthcare industry, where he has focused on analysis of the corporate
strategy implications of changes in public policy. Before joining
ABIOMED in January 2001, he was Senior Consultant for Reimbursement
Strategy at Thermo Cardiosystems, Inc., a leading manufacturer of
mechanical heart assist devices. In addition to his experience with
device companies addressing the end stage heart failure market, he has
extensive experience in both the service and the device areas of the end
stage renal disease market, having served for 12 years as Vice President
for Government Relations and External Affairs at National Medical Care,
