Douglas Michels – Tarantella Inc (ttla)

DOUGLAS L. MICHELS is the Chief Executive Officer, President and a Director of Tarantella, Inc. As co-founder of the company in 1979, he has played a key executive leadership role in the company's growth and evolution to its current form. In May 2001, Tarantella, Inc., was created from its predecessor company, The Santa Cruz Operation, Inc. Two of SCO's three divisions were sold to Caldera Systems and the company was renamed for its remaining Tarantella division. (Caldera Systems subsequently changed its own name to The SCO Group.) Prior to becoming CEO in 1998, Mr. Michels served as Executive Vice President and Chief Technical Officer. As one of the company's key strategists, he has been involved in all of its major acquisitions, which included the purchase of IXI and Visionware in the UK in 1993 and 1994. These two companies merged into the client integration division that was the genesis of the current Tarantella business. Mr. Michels was also instrumental in the purchase of UnixWare from Novell in 1995, which transferred ownership of UNIX System source technologies to SCO. In March 2000, he led the effort to radically reshape the structure of SCO by reorganizing the company into three independent divisions in order to place more focus and accountability on its major lines of business. Mr. Michels graduated with honors from the University of California at Santa Cruz, with a Bachelor of Science degree in Computer and Information Science. Profile
