R. DOUGLAS COWAN is Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of The
Davey Tree Expert Company. He joined Davey in 1974 as Corporate
Controller and was promoted to successive positions and
responsibility: Vice President of Finance in 1979; Executive Vice
President in 1984; President and Chief Operating Officer in 1985;
Chief Executive Officer in 1988; and Chairman in 1997. Mr. Cowan
has been a member of Davey's Board of Directors since 1982. He is
a member of the National Arborists Association, the International
Society of Arboriculture, past Chairman of the Executive Council
of the Conference Board, and Chairman of American Forests. Mr.
Cowan is currently serving a three-year term as a member of the
Business Advisory Council of the Federal Reserve Bank of
Cleveland. In May 1999, he was appointed by Ohio Governor Bob
Taft to a nine-year term on the Kent State University Board of
Trustees. Prior to that appointment, he served as Chairman of the
Kent State University Foundation. He is a graduate of Kent State
University with a Bachelor of Science degree in Business
