GARY SMITH became CIENA Corporation in August 1999 Chief Operating
Officer and in October 2000 he was also given the title of President and
elected to CIENA's Board of Directors. Mr. Smith had previously served
as Senior Vice President, Worldwide Sales, from September 1998 and Vice
President of International Sales since joining the company in November
1997. From June 1995 to October 1997, Mr. Smith served as Vice
President, Sales and Marketing for Intelsat, and from August 1991 to May
1995, Mr. Smith served as Vice President of Sales and Marketing for Cray
Communications, Inc. Mr. Smith received an MBA from Ashridge Management
