Gil Van Bokkelen

GIL VAN BOKKELEN is President and Chief Executive Officer of Athersys
Inc. Dr. Van Bokkelen co-founded Athersys and has since been President,
Chief Executive Officer and a Director. He has served as Chairman of the
Board of Directors since August 2000. Dr. Van Bokkelen also played a
fundamental role in developing the Synthetic Microchromosome Technology.
He received his PhD in Genetics from Stanford University, his BS in
Economics from the University of California at Berkeley and his BA in
Molecular Biology from the University of California at Berkeley.
