Eugene M. Herson

EUGENE M. HERSON has served as EMCON’s President and Chief Executive
Officer since 1994. In his current role and building on his 30 years
experience in the solid waste industry, he directed EMCON’s
restructuring into one of the nations leading providers of integrated
environmental services offering turnkey solutions, design build
packages, proprietary equipment, and operational services to their solid
waste and industrial clients. He streamlined its internal organization
and implemented a strategic plan which is leveraging EMCON’s core
competencies to capitalize on the opportunities in solid waste, site
restoration and facilities services. Under Mr. Herson’s leadership the
company pioneered the commercialization of its proprietary technology
for leachate management. The patented Leachate Evaporation System (LES)
is a unique and cost-effective solution for proper on-site treatment of
leachate (waste mixed with water). Mr. Herson has also been the key
driver in developing the successful strategy for its 50/50 joint venture
with Turner Construction Company ET Environmental Corporation. ET
combines expertise from both companies to offer capabilities not
available from other industry providers. Mr. Herson’s affiliation with
EMCON transcends three decades as a client (1974), director (1984), and
executive officer (1991). From 1992 to 1994, he was head of EMCON’s
Special Operations Division and was instrumental in spearheading new and
emerging services strategic programs and proprietary products, as well
as serving in a variety of financial, operating and management roles. He
has continued that role in diversifying and building one of the best
integrated environmental service providers in the country. Mr. Herson’s
dual credentials in civil engineering and public accounting, operational
experience within the solid waste industry, and executive assignments in
the environmental field are key attributes of his pro-active no-nonsense
management style. His previous experience includes starting up an
environmental consulting division, spearheading the development of a
number of new technologies, founder of successful companies in
agricultural and municipal wastewater sludge’s and developing a variety
of solid waste operations in California. He has was also responsible for
managing one of the nation’s largest integrated solid waste programs for
the City and County of San Francisco, including transfer, recycling and
disposal.
