SHAILESH MEHTA is Chairman of the Board, President and Chief Executive
Officer of Providian Financial Corporation. From 1994 to June 1997, Mr.
Mehta was President and Chief Operating Officer of the former Providian
Corporation. Within the former Providian Corporation, Mr. Mehta was
Executive Vice President from 1993 to 1994 and prior to that was
President and Chief Executive Officer for two of its subsidiaries,
Providian Direct Insurance and Providian Financial. He originally joined
the company now known as Providian Financial in 1986 as Executive Vice
President and Chief Operating Officer. He was named President and Chief
Executive Officer in 1988. Prior to joining Providian, Mr. Mehta was
Executive Vice President at the Ohio-based Ameritrust Corporation (now
Key Corp), where he worked for 12 years. Mr. Mehta serves on the Boards
of Directors of: Providian Financial Corporation; Hanover Direct, Inc.;
U.S. Board of MasterCard International, Incorporated; CIRRUS; American
Bankers Council of the American Bankers Association; Card Executive
Committee of the American Bankers Association; and Financial Services
Council. Mr. Mehta holds Master's and Doctorate degrees in Operations
Research and Computer Science from Case Western Reserve University. He
received his Bachelor of Science degree in Mechanical Engineering from
the Indian Institute of Technology in Bombay. Profile
